Hemp and a food start-up? It may sound strange, but it's actually quite logical. The idea came to Matthias when he was traveling a lot for work and was missing a healthy snack on his journeys. It needed to fill him up, keep him fit and not have a long list of ingredients with hundreds of artificial additives.
After a lot of research and brainstorming, we (Isabella, Matthias and Jakob) came across hemp, or more precisely, hemp seeds. They are rich in protein, high-quality fatty acids, minerals such as magnesium and iron and B vitamins.
And these are not only healthy and important nutrients, but precisely those that the body and mind need to function properly. So the idea was born: snacks made from hemp seeds! After countless attempts in the shared kitchen, our first 4 hemp bars were created: Original, Apple & Cinnamon, Cocoa Nibs and Espresso Crunch!
In order to finance the production of our first bars, we decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign. We were able to gain over 500 supporters in a short space of time and reach the funding amount, which showed us that we are on the right track.
The first hemp field
Matthias' brother Josef, who is a farmer, grew the first two hectares of hemp for our bars right on his doorstep in his own fields. This showed that hemp can be grown in Germany without any problems and grows excellently.
And something else also emerged: Insects, such as bees and bumblebees, love hemp fields! When we found out more about this, we actually discovered that a hemp field provides the perfect habitat for insects.
And we have discovered even more interesting facts. Hemp fields, for example, bind up to 4 times as much CO2 as a comparable area of forest! In addition, the hemp plants loosen the soil and supply it with nutrients.
So it was more than clear to us that we wanted to continue using hemp!
Superfood hemp
We have had great success with our hemp seed bar and have managed to be listed in organic stores such as denn's, organic markets and basic throughout Germany.
As consumers are increasingly recognizing the benefits of hemp products and demand is growing, we have developed more products made from hemp. We now not only offer hemp bars, but also hemp protein, snack balls, hemp and CBD oil and other delicious hemp products!
Due to increasing demand, we were able to expand our hemp fields from an initial 2 hectares (2018) to 100 hectares last year!
And we continue to develop new hemp products, cultivate hemp fields and research more sustainable alternatives. This is how we manage to make the world a little greener every day with hemp.
