Whether as food, in cosmetics or in industry, industrial hemp is the latest trend! Consumers increasingly understand the many positive properties of hemp, but are still unclear about some things. Here are 5 hemp facts you didn't know!
1. you can live for weeks on nothing but hemp seeds
Hemp seeds contain almost all essential nutrients, which is why it is theoretically possible to eat only hemp seeds for several weeks! Legend has it that Buddha ate a hemp seed every day on his path to enlightenment. This is why, according to Indian myth, hemp seeds are the only food to have attained perfection.
2. hemp was already being cultivated 10,000 years ago
The tradition and history of the hemp plant goes back thousands of years. Hemp is most likely the oldest plant used for textile fibers. Archaeologists have even found remains of hemp fabrics in ancient Mesopotamia dating back to around 8,000 BC.
3. hemp is better suited for paper production than trees
Hemp not only grows much faster than trees, but can also produce four times as much paper per hectare. This makes hemp a more sustainable and much more sensible alternative that could stop deforestation. Incidentally, our ancestors were already familiar with hemp paper: The first Bible and the Declaration of Independence, for example, were written on hemp paper.
4. hemp stores more CO2 than forests
Hemp is a real climate saver due to its incredible ability to store CO2! It stores more than twice as much CO2 as a comparable area of forest, and a large proportion of this in the long term through humus formation. With more hemp fields, our CO2 problem would be solved very quickly 😉
5. Over 5000 hectares of industrial hemp were cultivated in Germany in 2020
The cultivation of industrial hemp is permitted in Germany (with a permit) - and is steadily increasing! The 5,362 hectares that were cultivated in 2020 already represent an increase of 16% compared to the previous year. If this trend continues, it means that hemp will be seen more and more often in fields in Germany in the future!
