Cannabidiol is currently very much in vogue - and for good reason, as there are now several studies that prove its positive effects. However, it is not only used to treat a wide range of ailments and illnesses in humans, it can also be used in animals. If you're now wondering who came up with this crazy idea, you might be surprised: the topic is anything but new. Here you will find everything you need to know!
The ancient Greeks, for example, used cannabis to treat horses for colic and inflammation. CBD was even used successfully to treat battle wounds. But not only horses can benefit from the positive effects of cannabidiol. CBD is now also established as a therapy for pets. It can be used for cats and dogs to treat digestive problems, loss of appetite, anxiety, seizures and cancer, among other things. As with humans, new studies are currently revealing more and more possible applications, as the full spectrum of CBD's effects has still not been researched.
However, there are not as many ways to administer CBD to animals as there are to humans. CBD is most commonly mixed into the animal's food or given as a treat. The dose depends on the weight of the animal. As you might imagine, a horse will need a different concentration than a cat for the same effect.
However, you should not simply give your pet the same CBD oil that you consume. You need to be particularly careful if you want to give your cat CBD, as cats can only metabolize terpenes contained in cannabidiol very slowly. This can lead to poisoning and even death. That's why it's important to give your pet a CBD oil specifically for animals and to make sure that your cat only gets a CBD product without terpenes.
A clear advantage of CBD over the frequently used medicines on the market is that it has no side effects. So you can simply try it on your pet if it has symptoms. But it's best to talk to your trusted vet first!
Please tell us if you already have experience with CBD for pets, we are very curious! :)
