Difference cannabis cuttings vs. seedlings: Which is better for growing cannabis?

In cannabis cultivation, growers are often faced with the choice between using cannabis cuttings and seedlings. Both methods have their own benefits and challenges, but which approach is right for you? Here we shed light on the differences and give you valuable tips for optimal cultivation.

Cannabis cuttings: Faster, but not always more robust

Cannabis cuttings are cut shoots from a mother plant that are placed in a substrate to form roots. As they are genetic clones of the mother plant, they inherit its exact characteristics. This can be an advantage if the mother plant is particularly hardy or produces high yields. However, cuttings are generally less robust than seedlings, as they develop the shoot first and then the roots. This can lead to a less optimal root-to-shoot ratio, which in turn can reduce the yield. Cuttings are particularly suitable for mass production as they enable fast and efficient propagation. Cannabis cuttings are therefore also considerably cheaper to produce.

Cannabis seedlings: genetic diversity and robustness

Cannabis seedlingsgrown from seed are genetically independent plants. They develop the roots first and then the shoot, which leads to a better root-to-shoot ratio. This makes them more robust and often higher yielding than cuttings. However, growing seedlings requires more patience, as it takes some time for the seed to become a full-grown plant. However, seedlings are often the better choice for domestic use as they are more resistant to stress and disease.

Our tip: Cannabis seedlings from Bud Voyage

At Bud Voyage we offer both cannabis seedlings as well as cannabis seeds on offer. Our seedlings are cannabis seedlings in the narrower sense, which are grown after the second pair of leaves. However, we often refer to them as cannabis cuttings, as many growers are unfamiliar with the terms seedling and sapling. Bud Voyage seedlings offer the ideal combination of robustness and genetic diversity, resulting in higher yields and a more resilient plant. Another advantage is that you can send our cannabis seedlings straight into flowering, saving several weeks of time. This is not possible with cannabis cuttings.

Care after receiving the plants

After receiving your plants, you should take them out of the packaging and water them first, if possible spray them with water straight away. Allow the plants to acclimatize for one to two days. It is then advisable to carefully prick the roots with a knife to stimulate root growth. Make sure not to fertilize for at least one to two weeks, as too many nutrients can inhibit plant growth. Do not place the seedling or cutting directly in the sun, but after 5 days at the earliest. By growing under artificial light, the young plant must first get used to the intense sunlight.
